In June 2001, the Grupo de Pesquisas Cientifico-Ufológicas (GPCU) from Pelotas in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul presented a series of UFO sightings to the Brazilian Aerospace Defense Command (CONDABRA). Among the highlighted cases was that of state representative Paulo Azeredo, who reported a close encounter with a UFO while driving. The phenomenon included intense lights, a rounded object, and a sense of being followed, which caused both alarm and curiosity. Despite Azeredo's attempts to seek help, authorities did not take the report seriously, reflecting the general skepticism towards UFO testimonies.
In addition to this case, the GPCU documented a wave of sightings in the southern region of the state during November 2000. Witnesses from various cities described formations of luminous objects, some with sounds and physical effects like window tremors. These events, though not always confirmed, generated significant local interest. The GPCU emphasized that testimonies were consistent and that the objects displayed characteristics different from meteors or conventional phenomena. Despite the difficulty in obtaining serious attention from authorities, the group stressed the importance of investigating these phenomena with scientific rigor.
