On September 5, 1976, at around 7:22 AM, a man living in Tarbes, in the Hautes-Pyrénées department, observed a luminous phenomenon in the sky. From his 15th-floor apartment, he saw a red line above the hills of Sarrouilles. The witness observed the phenomenon for about ten minutes, but no other witnesses were reported. The gendarmerie investigated and concluded that the event was likely related to a weather balloon that remained airborne after releasing its payload in a field near Soues. Winds were calm on the 4th and 5th of September, supporting the theory that the balloon could have remained visible in the sky.
