In March 1978, witnesses in Saint-Maixent-L'École observed an oval-shaped object glowing with red and orange colors in the sky. The phenomenon was silent and appeared to move at low altitude, coming from the northeast and heading toward the southwest. Despite its apparent proximity, no sound was heard. The object disappeared behind the landscape without a trace. The detailed description and lack of conventional explanations generated interest in the case.
The GEIPAN classification as "C" indicates that no satisfactory explanation was found. Witnesses agreed on the object's shape, color, and behavior, which strengthens the credibility of the testimony. This case, although inconclusive, adds another piece to the puzzle of unexplained sightings in France during the 1970s.
