On August 15, 1978, between 9:00 and 9:10 PM, several witnesses in the departments of Gard and Ardèche observed a reddish luminous phenomenon moving from southwest to northeast. They described an incandescent ball followed by a trail. Interestingly, no sound was heard during the observation. This case was classified as a probable atmospheric entry, suggesting it could have been a meteorite or a natural object entering the atmosphere at high speed. Despite the lack of noise, witnesses agreed on the visual description, which adds credibility to the sighting. The phenomenon was recorded by the GEIPAN, the French organization responsible for investigating UFO sightings.
