A night security guard observed three pinkish balls forming an isosceles triangle over the sea at Toulon on the night of February 1, 1981. The case was initially classified as unexplained, but a later review revealed significant shortcomings: no written and signed testimony existed, and the description lacked essential data such as apparent size, distance, speed, or duration. The festive weekend, light northerly wind, and proximity to the city opened the door to simple explanations, such as balloons illuminated by urban lights. Without concrete data to support the original classification, GEIPAN downgraded the case to category C due to insufficient reliable information.
