Red, white and blue lights over Hayange in 1982

Summary

In January 1982 several witnesses in Hayange, Moselle, observed an object emitting red, white and blue lights as it moved slowly before vanishing over the horizon. Their clear and precise descriptions prompted a GEIPAN investigation, which determined that between 18:00 and 19:00 a commercial airliner passed through the area. Its navigation lights matched the colours and behaviour described by the witnesses exactly. The phenomenon was classified as solved and attributed to a conventional aircraft.
