At 10:30 PM on August 17, 1988, several witnesses in Brignoles (Var) briefly spotted an orange ball followed by a bluish light crossing the night sky. Descriptions were broadly consistent, though slight differences emerged regarding the object's speed. Some witnesses suggested it might be the Moon, but GEIPAN investigators dismissed that hypothesis and concluded the phenomenon was most likely a body entering the atmosphere. The case was classified as B and was not deemed of particular interest.
