On the night of 1 May 1990, around 11 p.m., a man driving near Thiant noticed a stationary red dot in the sky and stopped his car to watch. After a few minutes the dot shifted abruptly sideways, then froze again. Two minutes later it approached, revealing three white lights arranged in an isosceles triangle with the red dot at the centre. The formation flew over the car and vanished at high speed without any sound. His partner also witnessed the event. Despite press coverage, no other witnesses came forward and no explanation was found.
