On the night of September 23–24, 1997, two independent witnesses in the Savoie region spotted a very bright oval-shaped light with a tail. The phenomenon lasted only seconds and produced no sound. Although the object was not identified with absolute certainty, investigators concluded the description was consistent with atmospheric entry of a meteorite or space debris. GEIPAN classified the case as category A.
