🇬🇧 Ministry of Defence
In 2003, the UK Ministry of Defence received multiple reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs). These now-declassified official documents show how each report was handled: they were analyzed to rule out potential threats to national security, but the MOD did not attempt to identify the phenomenon itself. The reports include detailed descriptions of the objects seen, such as lights in the sky, triangular shapes, or maneuvers impossible for conventional aircraft. Despite the strange descriptions, the Ministry concluded there was no evidence of hostile activity or unknown technology. In many cases, witnesses were advised to consider natural or conventional aerial explanations, though no detailed scientific analysis was offered.
The files also show that reports were processed by the Directorate of Air Operations, which kept records of dates, locations, and sighting characteristics. In several cases, there were no additional witnesses or evidence, making further investigation difficult. Although reports were taken seriously, the Ministry's focus was strictly defensive, with no interest in exploring scientific or technological aspects. Finally, these documents were archived and, according to instructions, destroyed after a review period, limiting historical access to UFO reports in the UK.
