In September 1970, USAF Captain William Schaffner died when his Lightning F6 crashed into the North Sea during an interception mission. According to declassified documents, the RAF and MOD denied any UFO connection, stating there was no evidence of an "unidentified aircraft" involved. However, local newspapers and contemporary accounts described conflicting versions, including radar reports of an object moving at impossible speeds and descriptions of a bright, football-shaped object. The confusion between the official version and media stories generated UFO rumors. The official report attributes the crash to pilot error and lack of training in low-level maneuvers, while alternative accounts suggest a more mysterious narrative.
