In August 1953, near a camp located southeast of Shakhnya, three flying objects were observed during the night. Witnesses reported that the objects appeared at different times, between 10:45 and 11:45 PM, and moved from the southeast to the northwest. No sound was heard during their passage, which confused the observers. One of the objects was seen for a few seconds over the camp's partially lit installations, its reddish glow resembling that of a meteor. Despite the sightings, the exact altitude and speed of the objects could not be determined.
Initially, witnesses thought the objects might be rockets or similar weapons, but the lack of sound led to the rejection of that possibility. The description of the objects and their behavior did not match known aircraft or missiles of the time. Subsequent reports agreed that the observed phenomenon was likely a luminous body, such as a rocket or an unidentified object. This document, classified by the CIA, is part of a series showing how unidentified aerial phenomena were recorded and analyzed during the Cold War.
