In December 1990, a Japanese cosmonaut aboard the Mir space station made surprising comments about lights in the sky. Toyehiro Akiyama, part of a Soviet-Japanese mission, mentioned seeing a "huge ball of light" for seven minutes on September 26. According to Gennadiy Strekalov, this could be an unknown natural phenomenon. The observations also included comments on pollution in Japan and the United States, contrasting with the clean air over the Caribbean. The mission, part of a space research program, included experiments with frogs and adaptation to weightlessness.
