Summary

In May 1968, an unidentified aerial phenomenon was observed by multiple aircraft near Lérida. Two F-86s reported a bright, stationary object resembling two stacked bodies. Later, two F-104s attempted to approach with cameras, describing shapes like an inverted spear or a "squid-like body." However, altitude differences and adverse conditions prevented clear photographs. Radar detected two close echoes, and the object slowly ascended before disappearing.

Although initially thought to be extraterrestrial, investigators concluded it was likely a stratospheric balloon launched by the CNES. These balloons, used for scientific experiments, can take similar shapes and exhibit slow movement. Pilots' descriptions matched spherical balloons, which can deform with altitude and sunlight. Despite initial confusion, the case was declassified and archived without further conclusions.
