In September 1972, a 68-year-old woman named Nellie Smith reported an unidentified aerial object to Australian authorities. She observed the object over the ocean near Perth. According to her account, the object initially appeared as a bright star that began to move. Although it first looked like a single point of light, Smith described that as it approached, the object revealed two parts connected by a dark line. The object moved inland and then northward before disappearing. There was no physical evidence associated with the sighting, such as photographs or ground damage, and it was not identified as an aircraft or weather balloon. The Royal Australian Air Force documented the report, but no conclusive explanation was reached.
Smith's description included details such as the orange color on the object's rear and the absence of sound. Although natural explanations like planets or aircraft were considered, none provided a satisfactory explanation. The official report does not mention any military or civilian activity in the area at that time matching the observation, leaving the case categorized as unexplained.
