This document is a progress report by Bill Chalker on his research into official Australian government involvement in the UFO controversy. In 1982, Chalker examined files from the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and the Department of Aviation, accessing reports of sightings from 1955 to 1982. He also engaged with defense scientists and officials, and obtained classified documents on famous cases like the Drury film and the Valentich incident. Through these investigations, Chalker revealed how Australian authorities handled UFO reports, focusing mainly on national security concerns rather than positive identifications. His work laid the foundation for understanding official policy on UFOs in Australia over decades.
Chalker also collaborated with international researchers and published his findings in specialized journals. He highlighted cases such as the radar-visual Sea Fury incident and the mysterious Groote Eylandt event, where a pulsating light caused compass deviations. Although many files remain classified or lost, Chalker managed to reconstruct a coherent narrative on how Australian agencies handled UFO reports, including potential official "cover-ups." His research remains relevant for understanding the history of UFOs in the Southern Hemisphere.
