In August 1954, a Royal Australian Navy pilot reported seeing two luminous objects on his radar during a night flight from Nowra, New South Wales. The objects, described as "flying saucers," were moving at extremely high speeds, far exceeding that of the aircraft. The pilot contacted Nowra control, who confirmed via radar the presence of three aircraft, including the pilot's, but could not identify the other two. The only known aircraft in the area was a T.A.A. Convair, which did not explain the sightings. The Australian Navy investigated and concluded there was no conventional explanation for the phenomenon.
Military authorities, including the Navy and Royal Australian Air Force, treated the incident with utmost discretion. The pilot, Lieutenant J.A. O'Farrell, was considered a credible and experienced witness. Despite investigations, no reasonable explanation was found for the objects, and the incident was kept secret for months. The case was shared with intelligence committees and the possibility of military experiments was considered, but no hypothesis was confirmed. The mystery remained unresolved, and the files stayed classified for years.
